Cinema Misfits, Bonus Halloween Episode: Exorcist II: The Heretic, Jaws 2, and Psycho II

Halloween-2
The Exorcist, Jaws, and Psycho.  Each one of these films spawned a sequel, bastard offspring that, for the most part, the creators of the original versions refused to have anything to do with.  In this Bonus Halloween Episode, the Misfits take a second look at Exorcist II: The Heretic, Jaws 2,  and Psycho II, and find that while these are flawed films, lost in the shadows cast by their predecessors, they do have their own small ambitions and marginal successes.  They are also, in many cases, unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.

Thanks for listening! We’ll be back in three weeks.

  1. I did not have the pleasure of first seeing “The Exorcist II” on opening night with an audience chomping at the bit for a great movie-going experience, that instead, for the most part went horribly wrong. (That personal experience for me was seeing “Airport 75” at the Cinerama Dome, with an audience who thought it was about to see a drama; but instead, was treated to an unexpected comedy, layered with unintentional inside jokes). Anyway… I saw “The Exorcist II” at the old Academy Theatre (on Melrose) with ‘industry insiders’. What that produced was about half the audience laughing or trying to stifle same, while the other half kept shushing those who easily saw the “camp” nature of the finished product.

    • For flat-out ridiculous, it’s hard to beat Karen Black flying a 747, but I think Exorcist II has a couple of scenes that could give it a run for it’s money.
