About Jim Rutherford

I am a projectionist in the UCLA Film and TV Department, and I have been watching movies for as long as I can remember. Some of my favorite directors are Stanley Kubrick, Chuck Jones, Alejandro Jordorowsky, Richard Lester, and John Milius.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 91: 22 Jump Street, Jersey Boys, and How to Train Your Dragon 2

ep-91-6n90
6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

22-Jump-Street
22 Jump Street.  It’s actually more of a comedy about sequels than it is a sequel to a comedy.

Jersey-Boys
Jersey Boys.  If Da Man had his way, the title of this film would be Jersey Boy, or maybe The One Season, or possibly just Frankie Valli.

dragon-2
How to Train Your Dragon 2  Dragons may be creations of fantasy, but the reality is that this sequel holds its own against the original.  Hiccup, Toothless, and the gang are back together, and this is a flight of fantasy you’ll want to take.

Do-DoIntroducing Miss Dorthea Brookes AKA Dodo, The Misfit Mascot.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 89: A Million Ways to Die In The West, Belle, and Godzilla

6n90-89
6 ‘n 90! Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

One-Million

A Million Ways to Die in the West. Unfortunately for Seth McFarland, there are almost as many ways to die at the box office. His latest film is one of them.

Belle

Belle. In French, it means a beautiful woman. But what about the film…about a beautiful mulatto woman born into an aristocratic world that can never fully accept her? Is Belle “bon” or simply “pas si bon”?

Godzilla-2

Godzilla.  The tag line for the 1998 Godzilla was “Size matters.” Fortunately, the tag line for the latest reimagining of Godzilla could be “Talent matters.”

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 88: Draft Day, Noah, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2

ep-88-Steve
6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

Draft-Day
Draft Day.  If Hollywood held a draft, the movie Draft Day probably wouldn’t go until the seventh round.  Still, you might pick it up in a straight trade for a Channing Tatum romance or even a Cuba Gooding, Jr. direct-to-video release.

Noah
Noah. What Darren Aronofsky did for ballet in the Black Swan, he now does for the Bible in Noah. He makes it dark, psychological, and a little silly. As an extra bonus, he throws in fracking, rock people, and a psychopathic Noah.

SpideyThe Amazing Spider-Man 2. Considering the amount of screen time Andrew Garfield spends out of his Spider-Man outfit, a better title might be The Annoying Peter Parker.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 87: All is Lost, Sabotage, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier

e9-87-6n906 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

all-is-lost   All is Lost.  Bob in a boat.  ‘Nuff said.

SabotageSabotage. The only thing sabotaged in this film is Arnold Shchenagger’s movie comeback.

CapCaptain America: The Winter Soldier.  This time around there are no USO shows or musical numbers. Instead, The Star Spangled Man takes on Hydra’s Master Plan, and there are lots and lots of bullets.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 86: 300: Rise of an Empire, Non-Stop, and The Grand Budapest Hotel

ep-86-6n90
6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

300
300: Rise of an Empire.  According to Martin Luther:  “Blood alone moves the wheels of history.”  One thing’s for sure, blood certainly moves a wheel or two in Hollywood’s latest version of Greek history.

non-stop
Non-Stop.  For the Misfits, the only thing non-stop about Liam Neeson’s new film is their disagreement about what does and doesn’t work.

Budapest
The Grand Budapest Hotel. If M. Gustave were to describe the appeal of Wes Anderson’s dark screwball comedy to his lobby boy, Zero, he would certainly say that it had a certain je ne sais quoi. The Misfits, however, might just say, “It’s the best film of the year,” and leave it at that.

Cinema Misfits, Episode 82: Dallas Buyers Club, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Philomena

ep-82-6n90
6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

Dallas-buyers
Dallas Buyers Club.  First Anne Hathaway lost 25 pounds to be in Les Miserables, and now Matthew McConaughey loses even more weight for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.  In the future, Academy members won’t vote for best actor but will hold a weigh-in, and whoever comes in lowest will take the Oscar.

Inside-Llewyn
Inside Llewyn Davis.  Even though critics seem to love Inside Llewyn Davis, fans of folk music probably haven’t been this outraged since Dylan went “electric” at the Newport Folk Festival.

Philomena
Philomena.  This is the story of a woman who was forced by a convent to sign away the parental rights to her young son, and of her 50 year search to find him.  You know, sometimes it seems like it takes that long to find a decent movie at the local multiplex, but if you go to see this film, both your search, and Philomena’s, will have a happy ending.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 73: This is the End, Solomon Kane, Despicable Me 2, and The Way Way Back

6n90-73
6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

This-is
This is the End.  If you’re looking for a funny, clever film about Armageddon, forget what Jim Morrison said.  This is the End is definitely not your friend.

Solomon-Kane
Solomon Kane.  Finally someone has managed to do justice to Robert E. Howard’s vision and put it up on the movie screen.  Surprisingly, it’s not Conan but Solomon Kane.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 72: White House Down, World War Z, and The Lone Ranger

6 ‘n 90!  Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

white house down
White House Down.  Once you’ve said Channing Tatum’s acting is the best thing in a movie, you’ve pretty much said all you need to know about a film.

wwz
World War Z.  While most summer blockbusters have a 2 or 3 after their titles and are walking dead versions of a one-time original story or character, World War Z actually manages to breathe new life into the expiring zombie genre.

Cinema Misfits Podcast: Bonus 85th Academy Awards Episode

85th Annual Academy Awards - ShowAnneseth 2Jennifer

Spoiler alert:  Daniel Day-Lewis wins the Oscar for Best Actor.  Almost as shocking–the Misfits actually enjoy the Oscar telecast.  This show has something for every Misfit: crude humor for Da Man, singing and dancing for Nancy, Bond for Lou, and sock puppets for Jim.
